5 Mistakes I Made with Productivity

Brendon Burchard once said, "true experts are students first."

When I first heard that, I admit I scoffed.


Aren't experts supposed to have all the answers?

Uh, no!

I've also heard that experts are just a few feet ahead of everyone else following them.

If you're not learning, you're not growing.

And I have so learned over the past few years.

Here are five mistakes I've made with productivity that have helped me grow, so I better serve you.

Mistake #1: Overthinking. 

"Stop dwelling and start doing," Entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk.

Thinking is an integral part of being productive, but it only takes me so far.

I believe if you buy and read a book but do not implement what you've learned, you've wasted your money and your time.

In the past, I used to spend too much time thinking about what I should do next. And when I write "thinking," I mean getting paralyzed by analyzing.

Nothing replaces actual doing.

As I look back on the times, I spent too much time thinking, I can see it was a waste of time because overthinking caused me, in many cases, to do nothing! I would have been much better at doing and correcting my actions than not doing anything.

Mistake #2: Striving for perfection. 

Perfection does not exist on Earth, and it's not even possible. And that's okay.

Here's the thing: I get that perfection is not possible, yet I seem to always strive for it.

The problem is not in the striving for it but in the waste of time in the fruitless and endless quest.

There is no perfect plan, morning routine, to-do list, how to focus, or any other component of productivity.

As I mentioned in mistake #1, doing is better than dwelling.

Mistake #3: Getting stuck doing something one way. 

Just because I learned or did something a year ago, a week ago, or even yesterday doesn't mean that it's the right way to do it today.

I used to think that the only calendar I needed was the one on my devices.

I thought this way because I had a closed mind.

Then, I re-discovered print planners and immediately saw my productivity improve. Why? Writing down what I was going to do made it real, while just typing my plan on my devices did not.

These days, I am happy to be open-minded. As a student of productivity, I am constantly learning and trying new things, all while I watch my productivity improve.

Mistake #4: Doubting myself and what I was doing. 

Going back to mistake #1, I doubt myself when I spend too much time thinking and not enough time doing.

This hit me when I was overthinking, switching from planning on my devices to using a printed planner. Instead of just trying a new way, I would think, "what if this doesn't work for me"? What a waste of time.

I will make mistakes, and that's how life works and how I learn.

When I doubt what I'm doing, it unnecessarily slows or even halts my progress.

Mistake #5: Not doing what I teach!

I teach the importance of clearing the clutter mentally and physically for optimum productivity, taking micro-breaks when the feeling of overwhelm or stress raises its head, and avoiding procrastination at all costs.

And yet, I struggle with these things sometimes.


Because I'm a human being.

Fortunately, I tend to catch myself and course-correct (most of the time, definitely not all!).

While I used to get upset, I accept that I did it; I don't own a time machine, so I can go back in time and not do it, and I move on.

As my aunt Rori says, "you've got to improvise, adapt, and overcome."

Am I the only one?
