An Unexpected Benefit of the Pandemic

Before I begin, let me acknowledge that the Covid-19 pandemic has caused a lot of physical and emotional pain to many. What I'm about to share with you is by no means meant to diminish any pain anyone has suffered during these unprecedented times.

I believe that blessings can be found in almost any situation, good or bad, if you look for them.

On March 11, 2020, the National Basketball Association (NBA) suspended the 2019-2020 season due to the pandemic.

The National Hockey League (NHL) suspended play just one day later.

For months, there were no sports on television - other than replays of past games.

I was among the many who were at a loss. I loved watching sports. Except for golf and baseball, I could (and would!) watch any sport that was on. My wife and I cut the cord from satellite in April 2015, so we only have access to programming broadcast over the air.

But then something almost magical happened: I began to lose interest in watching sports.

When the NBA announced they would resume playing the season "in the bubble" at Walt Disney World resorts on July 30th, I had zero interest.

I found myself enjoying the time I had "found" by not watching sports!

I didn't watch a single game of the 2020-2021 NBA or NHL seasons.

And I've not decided if I will watch any NFL games when the new season starts in September.

But it's more than just sports.

Before Covid, when a show my wife and I liked would be canceled, we'd find another show to replace it with.

No more.

Now when a show is canceled, we don't seek to replace it with another show. Instead, we spend time doing stuff together, reading, or anything else other than watching TV.

We do not subscribe to any streaming services except Apple TV+ (which only has original programming) because they don't release a show's entire season. Instead, they release one or two episodes to start the new season then drip out new episodes every week.

I'm thoroughly enjoying my newfound freedom. I'm creating more content for my followers (thank you for reading this!), spending more time with my wife, and learning how to be a better productivity coach, expert, and human being.
