My New Habit: Writing (Again!)

Back on February 7, 2021, I wrote, I've Declared Myself a Writer…Now What?, announcing that I declared myself a writer on January 23rd.

But until June 14, I'd not written anything.

Why?

I wish I had a good answer for you.

But...I don't.

I failed to do the very thing I wrote about in the last blog postwrite daily.

Well, that's not entirely true.

I did write for 25 consecutive days. Not a bad streak, if I do say so myself.

So why did I stop?

As I reflected on that question, the answer became clear as the sun at noon on a cloudless day: I committed to writing an article every day instead of writing every day.

Did you catch the subtle difference?

There are two of them.

First, I committed to writing a new article every day. That's a lot of pressure.

Second, I committed to every day.

How I'm writing now

I have scheduled a one-hour block of time five days a week (instead of daily) to write.

If I complete an article, I'll post it on my blog, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

If I don't, well, I won't.

I feel that I put undue pressure on myself to write an article worthy of publishing every day. And as a result, my quality suffered.

You suffered. (Sorry!)

What no longer matters to me 

I no longer care about how many words each post has. This was one of the things that I struggled with as I was writing to be seen on Medium instead of for you!

Yes, seriously!

Now, whenever my schedule says "Write", that's what I do.

And by the way, this appointment is unmovable.

I'm literally going to sit down at my MacBook and write.

Some days I'll write something worth sharing with you. While other days will be what my mastermind friend Anne in Sheffield, United Kingdom says, "rubbish!"
